In western Kenya, a waterpot means life. It carries the water that makes a home possible, but filling it can require women and girls to walk for hours through isolated terrain.

Martha Akumu has made that journey since childhood. She has also been raped three times while fetching water. For years, much of what happened remained unspoken. When Martha begins telling her story, other survivors come forward, revealing that her experience is part of a much larger crisis hidden within the community.

Everline is pregnant after being raped at the river and rejected by her father. Valery loses her mother after a brutal assault at the river; years later, Valery is raped while carrying the same burden her mother once carried. As their stories emerge, so does one reason so many have remained silent: longstanding traditions can treat survivors as spiritually contaminated, punish them for what was done to them, and drive them from their families.

Julius, a pastor and social worker who has spent nearly two decades intervening in crises like theirs, works alongside Jennifer, an assistant chief and village elder who has helped these women and families through some of their most difficult moments. With more survivors speaking openly, they bring sixteen village elders together, forcing the community to confront both the violence it has kept quiet and the traditions that have silenced and punished survivors for generations.

 

Waterpot is a story about what women are asked to carry—and what can begin to change when that burden is finally spoken aloud.
